The only Maronite who refused the Presidency of the Republic

1972 - Two weeks only after his election at the National Assembly (as Aley deputy), Pierre Hélou is appointed Minister in Saeb Salam's second cabinet, one of the most important governments formed by Salam, with a mandate to set up the first Ministry of Oil and Industry.


1972 One of the founders of the « Movement of the Oppressed » created by Imam Moussa el-Sadr
1988 Pierre Hélou is nominated much, against his will, with four other contenders to the Presidency
Sept.1988 First minister to be appointed by President Amin Gemayel to chair an interim cabinet

Nov. 1989 Takes an active part in the election of René Moawad as President of the Republic
